While some trends lend themselves to specific occasions, others are made to measure for certain seasons. Tartan in summer is the sartorial equivalent of a hot and spicy Madras on a sticky summer evening, but once the weather turns, it feels just right.
I’ve always been a fan of tartan trousers – perfect with a big knit and chunky DMs – but I was excited to stumble across an updated take on the look through this top/skirt combo by London-based brand A.W.A.KE. MODE.
First up, the top. Aside from ticking the tartan trend, it also nods to cut-out detailing which is everywhere this season. I love it with the matching skirt but it would look just as strong teamed with high-waisted jeans and a biker.
As far as the skirt is concerned, it really is what Highland dreams are made of. I’ve dreamt of owning a kilt ever since discovering Le Kilt several years ago, but never got round to forking out for one. This maxi kilt is everything I’ve been waiting for – the high-waist fit and longer length is so flattering, as is the necessary side split. Once we’re done with A/W, I’ll be wearing mine with a slogan tee and Birkenstocks.
If head-to-toe tartan is a little extreme for you, I suggest breaking up some of the print with a military jacket such as this one from MASSCOB. This classic style of jacket is a great way of balancing out a statement trend.
Finally, the details – any bag which is a) velvet and b) resembles a make-up box will always get the thumbs up from me and Roger Vivier really has gone to town this season on the accessories front. I alway look to toughen up an outfit veering towards girly, so these understated military boots from my favourite Russell & Bromley are the perfect addition for stomping around town.
